Helpful tips I’ve picked up over the years of being a stay at home mum

Clean the bath when you are in the shower

No more leaning over the bath and easier to get access to the shower for rinsing.

Similaly, clean the rest of the bathroom while the children are in the bath and need watching.

Hoover the living area of your house every day

High traffic areas get messy every day, especially when there are children about!

Doing this job, plus the required job of picking things off the floor, makes a huge difference to the feel of the house

Empty the dishwasher as you wait for kettle to boil in the morning

By doing this job early, and by making a “fun challenge” out of it, clears an area for the days dirty washing up to go.

Think about dinner plans when you wake up!

Keeping the family fed requires pre planning (defrosting and purchasing of food) and time management (when to begin meals and how much can be premade throughout the day).

As a stay-at-home-mum I like to pre make as much as I can while the children are at school.

Having 2 children on the spectrum it’s not unusual for me to make 2 or 3 different dinners a day (plus meals I may need help with cutting or lifting off the hob due to my MS, plus changes I may make due to my largely vegetarian preferences!!).

Plan weekly meal plans around what you have in fridge and freezer and what needs to be eaten soonest.

So, all things considered, I need to do a fair bit of pre planning when it comes to meals!

This is so important when it comes to both cutting food waste and cost.

Consideration must be taken to what is in the fridge and eating in soon. This can range from some left over chicken from your Sunday roast, some vegetable which have been sitting  in the cold department of the fridge but are still perfecting fine to add into a casserole or just some cheese which can be added to a sandwich or some grated cheese on top of a pasta dish.

Write a to-do-list each morning so your day has a plan

Put some paper and a pen on your bedside cabinet so you can jot down things you need to remember or put into action etc. These can then be added to your list the next day. Plus your random to do thoughts won’t disturb your sleep.

Plan well in advance for special occasions – birthdays, Easter, Christmas, friends birthdays etc

More and more we are using internet shopping and a delivery date 5 working days (or more) ahead means that you are not able to buy cards and gifts last minute.

To have the occasion that you would like means planning ahead.

Never leave a room empty handed

This is one of my most important tips in keeping your home tidy and clutter free.

Always take a few seconds to redistribute items to where they belong – dirty dishes into the kitchen, clean clothes upstairs, dumped shoes to the shoe cupboard etc etc
